Rituals II (Chillin’ in the Blue Dessert)

Luis Toledo Laprisamata’s surreal digital collages explore themes of scale, ritual, and otherworldly landscapes.

In this piece, a colossal woman dominates the composition, dwarfing golden figures scattered across the ground. The intricate details of the scene resemble a psychedelic map of veins, roads, and highways, rendered in vibrant, almost hallucinatory colours. Laprisamata’s mastery of digital collage allows him to meticulously assemble each “atom of colour,” constructing a vast and intricate universe.

More Rituals form the Blue Desert

“More Rituals from the Blue Desert” further develops this visual language. The stark contrast in size between the figures suggests a hierarchical structure, with two smaller groups appearing to engage in a ritualistic connection with a larger, deity-like being. The image is rich with symbolism: an hourglass, hexagonal sigils, and a stairwell leading to a dark, cosmic portal. Thousands of biomorphic and optical illusion elements coalesce to form the figures and populate the air. One of the “gods” possesses a large cat head, hinting at hybridity and mythical creatures. The composition’s tension, with figures seemingly poised for conflict, could symbolize the clash between the human and animal realms. The sheer complexity of the scene evokes a sense of immense power and an immersive, otherworldly illusion.

Rituals

Death, spirituality, necessity, beginning and end. Death is just one more step in which we abandon the skin to continue our existence with another form. The liberating end. Another aspect of life, so vital and necessary as life itself.

The use if images and aesthetics picked up from the past, mixed with abstract and contemporary forms, transport us into a un-timed territory; and in here, present, past and future mix in a symbolic reality.
